The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
- The development of acquaintances as an opportunity for service.
- High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his/her occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
- The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to personal, business and community life.
- The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.
Rotary’s Four-Way Test is a simple ethical guide Rotarians use to evaluate decisions, actions, and relationships — in business and in everyday life. It’s been around since 1932 and is one of Rotary’s most enduring principles.
Before thinking, saying, or doing anything, Rotarians ask:
-
Is it the TRUTH?
-
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
-
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
-
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
That’s it — short, memorable, and intentionally practical.
The idea is that if something passes all four questions, it’s likely ethical, constructive, and aligned with Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self.” The test is used globally across cultures, religions, and professions, which is why it’s phrased in such universal terms.
