Fundraiser to Support ‘Wash Up, Kids!’ Exhibit to Teach Proper Handwashing Skills

To help local kids learn the skills and understand the importance of properly washing their hands, the Building for Kids, Children’s Museum is bringing a two-phase interactive handwashing exhibit to life. The Rotary Club of Appleton – Downtown invites you for a fundraising event on Wednesday, April 27 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Building for Kids, Children’s Museum to raise funds to support Phase 2. There will be gourmet food stations provided by Michiels Catering, a cash bar and a raffle for two chances to win gift cards to explore Downtown Appleton.

‘Wash up, Kids!’ is the second phase of the ‘Wash Up, Doc!’ exhibit at the Building for Kids, Children’s Museum. Phase 1 of this project is already complete, thanks to support from the Rotary Club of Appleton. An interactive handwashing exhibit was installed in the doll hospital, which prompts visitors with an audio recording detailing how to wash their hands, along with a timed LED light effect that simulates germs and how long it takes to wash germs away.

Phase 2 combines teaching proper handwashing techniques with real-world applications. A non-staining soap that has color designed to stick in spots often missed—like fingernails—will be installed in the restrooms. The color takes about 20 seconds to wash off. Proceeds from the fundraiser will help the Children’s Museum purchase colored soap to keep in their restrooms.

“We are so grateful to the Rotary Club of Appleton for sponsoring this exhibit,” says Oliver Zornow, Executive Director of the Building for Kids, Children’s Museum and member of the Rotary Club of Appleton – Downtown. “Like most skills, proper handwashing techniques are best learned at a young age, so we’re excited to implement fun and hands-on opportunities to practice good handwashing habits throughout the museum.”
